Clothing & tummy issues, what to look out for?

When dealing with your stomach or tummy discomfort, whether it’s bloating, cramps, period pain or anything in between, it’s really important to pay attention to how your clothes fit and feel. What you wear can make such a big difference for your comfort. Here at Midheavens, we understand that every woman’s body is different, and comfort should always, always come first. Let’s talk about what to look out for when you’re choosing clothes to help you feel more comfortable and confident!

1. Tight waistbands

While tight jeans or pants with tight waistbands may look stylish, they can be a nightmare for women with tummy issues. When the waistband digs into your skin, it can cause unnecessary pressure on your abdomen, making your bloating, cramps, and discomfort even worse.

What to look for: Choose clothing with soft, stretchy, or adjustable waistbands. These will provide comfort without putting any pressure on your stomach. Consider clothing with high waist options that can offer support without squeezing. For some women loose, low waist pants work better, try it out and see what works best for you!

2. Uncomfortable seams and stitching

Seams that dig into your skin or create friction can be so uncomfortable when you’re dealing with tummy problems. The stitching, especially in the waist or stomach area, can press against your skin, making your struggles even worse. If the seams aren’t smooth or placed well, they can make sitting, standing, or even moving around feel like a chore.

What to look for: Choose clothes that are designed with comfort in mind and pay attention to the seams. Seamless or flat-stitched clothing options can be much more gentle on the skin and less likely to cause irritation.

3. Rigid fabrics

While stiff fabrics like denim and thick cotton like jeans can look so cute, most of the time they’re not the best choice for keeping you comfy. Rigid fabrics don’t have the flexibility to stretch and move with your body, which can lead to added pressure on the stomach. They can also trap heat, making you feel warmer than you'd like during uncomfortable flare-ups, hello, most unocmfy outfit ever!

What to look for: Soft, breathable, and stretchy fabrics such as cotton blends or jersey knits are perfect for you! These materials have more give, allow for movement, and help your body stay cool and comfortable.

4. High-compression clothing

Compression clothes, while often used for support, can sometimes do more harm than good for you while dealing with your stomach pain. They work by applying pressure to the abdomen, but when your stomach is already bloated or cramping, this added pressure can make it worse for you. What might feel supportive in the short-term could end up increasing pain or discomfort in the long run. Again, this might work for some people and others, not so much. If you tried it and it helps for you, great!

What to look for: If you need gentle support, look for items designed with comfort in mind rather than compression. Loose-fitting or adjustable tops and skirts, dresses or pants with an adjustable fit can provide ease while offering support where needed.

Also something that works for me personally, when I wear a sweater dress or any dress in general, I wear workout shorts under them. They give you just that bit more comfort and support without feeling too compressed or tight and they cover you up, win win!

5. Overly structured clothing

Clothing with a lot of structure, like corsets or tailored dresses with stiff boning, can often feel too tight/constricting for you. When your body’s feeling bloated or crampy, the last thing you need is more restriction.

What to look for: Choose flowy, A-line silhouettes or items with adjustable waistlines that can move with your body. Dresses and tops that aren’t overly fitted and that allow for some space can give your body the room it needs to feel as comfy as possible.

  • Layering: Add layers of soft fabrics over your tummy for extra comfort. A light cardigan or oversized sweater can help hide discomfort without adding that tight feel.

  • Go for stretchy fabrics: Fabrics that feel soft and stretchy are your new best friend! It will work with you and make you feel comfortable.

  • Adjustable clothes: Right here at Midheavens we make adjustable clothing from stretchy fabrics that will work with you and not against you, making you feel comfy and beautiful!

When these stomach issues are part of your daily life, picking the right outfit when you have to go somewhere can make such a difference. By avoiding tight waistbands, uncomfortable seams, and stiff fabrics and instead opting for soft, breathable, and flexible materials, you can help yourself feel more comfortable!
